Come And Take It 3X5 Flag
The first military engagement of the Texas Revolution, the Battle of Gonzales, played a crucial role in cementing the significance of the “Come And Take It” motto. The battle began on October 2, 1835, when Mexican soldiers were sent to retrieve a small cannon that had been provided to the Texans for protection against Native American attacks.
After its appearance in Gonzales, the “Come And Take It” slogan took on a new life as a symbol of defiance against authority. The accompanying image of a cannon became iconic and synonymous with Texan culture. However, it was not until later that this symbol found its way onto a flag.
